y is ending in mid-Michigan. A warm and muggy day, but this is the beginning of August. Rain is needed and one is acutely aware of the lack of moisture as the lawns that are not watered have become brown with only a few tenacious weeds reminding us that
chlorophyll is still being produced. The wheat was harvested in the middle of July and the farmers are completing the baling of the wheat straw. The corn fields were more than "knee high by the 4th of July" and it looks like a bumper crop for this fall. Gardens are producing but the lack of rain is beginning to cut into production. Yet, the summer days have taken on a lazy character as the populace continues to enjoy the beauty of Michigan summers with warm days and pleasant nights. School won't begin until after Labor Day as legislated two years ago by lawmakers in Lansing. Tourism is a chief industry in Michigan and with the economy of the state at rock bottom, anything to keep the tourist economy stable is welcomed. Michigan is a beautiful state with The Lakes surrounding it to make two peninsulas.
This is a bed & breakfast in Calumet, Michigan which is a little north of Houghton/Hancock and south of Copper Harbor. We stayed there a year ago as we traveled with friends to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The opulence of another age was obvious. We drove over 500 miles from where we live in Michigan to reach the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. This is such a beautiful area.
There was also a pump organ in the B & B across the street. And look what was on the music rack .
